Much-Loved Girl From Candy Ad Revealed to Be Non-Human
Here's an odd little story about a Japanese ad. (I know, big surprise.) A recent spot for Ezaki Glico candies featured the all-girl Japanese theater group AKB 48—and introduced a new member of the group, Aimi Eguchi. She became an overnight sensation. Her profile on the band's website said she came from Saitama, a prefecture on the island of Honshu, that she competed in track and field, and that she had debuted in a photo shoot for Shueisha's Weekly Playboy magazine. In addition to the commercial, she shot a 20-second video of her own, which also got many views. There's just one problem: She isn't real. She was computer generated using the "best features" of six other members of the group. Check out the spot below, and the other clip and a making-of video after the jump. A great PR idea, to be sure—especially for Japan, which will surely be the first country to have fully functioning android spokespeople in the future. Via Work That Matters.
