Talking Tom Cat could be coming to a silver screen near you. Outfit7, makers of the wildly popular Talking Friends apps, signed a deal with talent agency William Morris Endeavor with the aim of bringing its cute and furry face to more traditional creative outlets.
Talking Friends characters like Tom Cat and Ben the Dog have become a sensation in the app world. The cuddly characters respond to users’ voices and gestures when interacted with on iOS and Android technologies. The app is averaging 15 million new downloads a month with a current total of 135 million downloads. Outfit7 saw the app success as a clear opportunity for the loved characters to foray into TV, films and books.
Unlike Angry Birds creator Rovio, Outfit7 has made clear that it is outsourcing its branding efforts. Rovio will soon release its next product in a long parade of Angry Birds merchandise, a self-published egg cookbook. The book is the most recent example of Rovio’s Disney-like approach of using cute characters to push merchandise. Outfit7 and its Talking Friends are instead looking to secure fame first. |
