How big is social media?

Facebook is just a website and it is actually now worth more than Disney world. So – Facebook is bigger than Disney now.  Also LinkedIN is very big in US, and it is worth more than Fiji island. Smart mobile phones give even new power to social media. We foresee, that there will be more mobile website browsers than computer-based browsers already  in 2013.

We love Facebook for it´s apps (made by Zynga, Rockyou etc), not for it´s code.

Google has also lots of different apps. Google +  means that Google tries to give more social approach to it´s services. More personal search results. Targeted personalised advertising.

Why does social media work?

Each person will regularly interact with 150 people. The same happens in Facebook – we do not interact actively with much more people on FB.

For marketing social media means:

  • credibility
  • referrals
  • influencers
  • partners
  • journalists (as  media about your field)
  • customer service – a lot of customer service can be managed through social media.

People will use multiple touch points now: instead of a search engine only search, they will use search engine, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter etc.

You have three tools: owned media, bought media and earned media. Earned media is social media. People won´t interact when you do not give them a certain value. If l join your Facebook – then what is in it for me?

Is Facebook working for brands?

Facebook fan pages study indicate that top fan pages of celebrities like lady Gaga, Eminem, Rihanna have millions of fans. But the amount of core fans only  ca:  0.001% (core fan = fan who has posted at least one comment).

  • Affinity: dependent on the user´s relationship with an object in the news feed.
  • Weight: is determined by the type of content, video/photo, link etc.
  • Decay: as an object gets older the lower the value

Facebook is a great CRM network for brands who know how to use it, but most do not know it. Social media is not just about likes, followers or friends. If you just need followers, follow many people  and they will follow you back.
